Sydney Sweeney ‘wanted to be drenched in blood’ in ‘Immaculate’

Warning: This article has spoilers for Immaculate.

As each producer and star of Immaculate, Sydney Sweeney had a good deal of concepts for the movie, but she had just one major ask for.

“My significant point was, by the conclusion of the motion picture, I just wanted to be drenched in blood,” she tells Entertainment Weekly, citing Prepared or Not and Carrie as examples of inspiration. “I like individuals moments exactly where, at the conclude of the film, you have the female badass that just went by means of the wringer and normally takes it all at the stop.”

And go as a result of the wringer she does: By film’s finish, Sweeney’s virgin nun Cecilia learns that her body has been utilized against her will to give beginning to what a mad scientist priest is hoping will be some kind of clone of Jesus Christ, and the only way to escape it all is to go on a bloody killing spree — all through labor, no considerably less.

If this appears intense, that is mainly because it is — but the film is not all blood and gore. In fact, there are some comedic times — what is actually funnier than a nun casually dropping an f-bomb? — and the horror components by themselves really don’t all slide into one particular neat class.

Sweeney and director Michael Mohan, who previously labored jointly on the 2021 film The Voyeurs and 2018 Television series Every thing Sucks!, precisely sought to come across a “terrific stability concerning moments of levity and moments that we really wished to go for it,” says Sweeney. “I am a significant admirer of all forms of horror genres, and I seriously wanted some thing that experienced a bit of a combination of all the things,” she states. “I love leap scares, so I pushed for a great deal of jump scares in the movie. Mike likes a good deal of psychological thrillers, so a lot of the for a longer period, extra thrilling psychological photographs were from him. So it was just a mixture of all of our beloved loves from horror movies, and then creatively what is enjoyable and attention-grabbing and enjoyable and pushes the boundaries to do.”

A person horror element that viewers will not find in Immaculate, although, is a supernatural antagonist. The evil entity listed here is purely of the human selection, which is why, even although she 1st auditioned for the role 10 yrs in the past, the script “stuck with” Sweeney all this time.

“I like horror movies and I’ve been seeking to do them, but scripts that I’ve been acquiring were a good deal of just, like, obtaining chased by this supernatural creature, or it just failed to come to feel grounded in a psychological space,” she explains. “I always held imagining about Immaculate, likely again to it, due to the fact the scariest parts of this movie have been fact and mankind. And I loved the truth that what she was trying to escape and operate from was basically developing inside of her.”

Immaculate, which also stars Álvaro Morte, Simona Tabasco, Benedetta Porcaroli, Giorgio Colangeli, and Dora Romano, is in theaters now.
